Copying the same idea as in Arrimus 3D’s 3DS Max video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqay1_giSgk ), and showing how it’s done in Blender. A few more steps because the way the mesh deformer and modifier stacks work, however it’s not too hard and the end result is the same.

And if you’re using the newest version of Blender 2.78c or later, the same function as the solidify & mesh deform combo can be done just using the surface deform modifier. I believe it was in the version I was using to make this video, but wasn’t aware from the start. So the above is still useful if using older versions.
