3DTutorials: Please, tell us a bit about yourself like: what are you, what are you engaged in?
Damian Jara: Hi ! First of all, I would like to thank for this interview. My name is Damian Jara, I'm 30 years old and I live in Poland. I'm a CG Artist for about 5 years now, and I'm having a lot of fun while I'm doing it! Actually I'm working as a freelancer for two companies, "TurboSquid" as a modeler, texturer, and renderer artist and "Magic Reality" as a sculptor of characters for the 3d printing miniature. In the first months of my proffesional work I was doing some architecture designs, but when I became more and more advanced in computer graphics, it started to be boring. I like playing games so in a short of time I was fascinated how the characters and environments looks like in those games. I decided to take first steps in making them. I'm in the CG industry for a short period of time, so I didn't found my own style yet, I don't even know how I would describe mysfelf - character artist or environment artist? I really like to do all those things. In the near future I'm seeing myself in the gemedev industry.
3DTutorials: Do you remember when and how did you get to know the CG? Do you have a specific professional degree?
Damian Jara: This is a long story, but in brief when I was in primary and high school I was always drafting something in the back of my exercise book. I was fascinated with manga and anime art, so I was drawing it all the time with my friend. At the time, my old, best firiend was already a CG Artist, so he tried to persuade me to be like him and learn and train to became CG Artist, but I didn't like that concept to live in front of the computer screen. I decided to went to college, it was an english philology, but unfortunatelly there was a familly issue I couldn't handle, so I decided to quit the school. Some time passed, took a grip on myself, and I went to another college. This time it was logistics. Sadly but true, another familly issue came along. Yup, it must be bad luck or something. College was over for me, so I didn't knew what to do with myself anymore. Back then in 2011 my friend was a CGArtist and He encourage me to jump in to this. It would be the comeback to the things I like to do the most. It’s 5 years since I’ve created my first simple box in the 3ds studio max. I always wanted to combine job with the passion, so here it is! I do not have any proffesional degree, I think it's not so necessary for me, because I'ma a autodidact person so all what I learned to this day I learned from myself and the holy internet where there is a lot of knolege.
3DTutorials: When did you realize that you want to practice the CG seriousely?
Damian Jara: When I've got my first projects from TurboSquid I guess and it went very well.
3DTutorials: Tell us, please, what tools do you use in your work? Do you learn new softwares or plan to any in the nearest future?
Damian Jara: Basicly I use Zbrush and 3ds max the most. When I started in CG I was thinking that I will be always doing some architecture visualzations and now I'm here sculpting some characters. I thought that it will be too hard for me to do, because I'm in the industry for a short period of time. Sculpting and anatomy is very hard to learn but I'm a fighter and a headstrong guy. When really want something I'll surely fight for it.
3DTutorials: How do you think what key qualities should CG artist possess nowadays to achieve success and be permanently in demand?
Damian Jara: I think that he should be headstrong and obstinate. Willing to learn new things and master to perfection all the things that he already knows and can make.
3DTutorials: How much time do you spare for CG? How do you amuse your leisure and take your ease?
Damian Jara: CG is my full job so I spent at my desk 8 to 12h a day. Time is flying so quickly in front of screen. When I do not have money projects to do I usualy work on my own stuff and keeping practice.
3DTutorials: Who are your favorite artists?
Damian Jara: From my childhood it will be Akira Toriyama. Now, everyone who make cool stuff is my personal hero.
3DTutorials: And the last question what new work we should be expecting from you soon?
Damian Jara: During this interview I'm working on a character for Magic Reality and second isn't showed yet, so in near future I will be expecting to show those sculptures to the public. Also I have in plans to make some sci-fi environment and cyborgs/mech or something in hard surface. I've got lot of in my mind to work on.
